Lonnie Bedwell's Story

From Participant to Trip Leader to World-Class Blind Adventurer

At one point in his life, Lonnie felt his blindness was a wall preventing him from moving forward. But, he found freedom and a way through with adaptive sports. “I was introduced to the Adaptive Sports Center in 2012. It’s been quite an exciting adventure over the last 10 years and led me to places around the world that I don’t think I ever would have been,” says Bedwell. He ultimately became the first person with blindness to kayak the entire Grand Canyon and recently summited Denali, North America’s highest mountain peak.

“Just being here, it sparks up my life. The people who do the programs here, support the programs, the participants, the caregivers—it takes us all to just join in and change the world and make it a wonderful place for us to live.” – Lonnie Bedwell, Veteran, ASC Participant since 2012, and Trip Leader

Lonnie embodies our mission at Adaptive Sports Center. His spirit and enthusiasm motivate others to experience the life-changing power of outdoor adventure. He is a shining example of the resilient human spirit, and the importance of sharing your journey to encourage others.
